Music Ministry

The music ministry at Christ United Methodist Church:
  • Praises God and helps the congregation experience the Living Christ through music in worship
  • Fosters growth as disciples and musicians by learning music that is challenging spiritually as well as musically
  • Nurtures and cares for all of God’s children — in the choir, in the congregation, in the world
  • Offers tremendous fun while doing all of the above!
The music the choirs sing each Sunday helps to express the scripture for that day. We use many styles, ranging from chants and traditional choral music to gospel songs and African freedom music.

Anthems and major works sung recently include:
  • The Magnificat, John Rutter
  • The Messiah, Handel
  • Requiem, Gabriel Fauré
  • Down to the River to Pray, arr. Sheldon Curry
  • Blest Are They, David Haas
  • My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, Mack Wilberg
  • O Sifuni Mungu, arr. David Maddox
  • Ain’-A That Good News, William Dawson
  • Come, O Redeemer, Come, Fernando Ortega
  • O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing, Mark Miller
While quality of the choral singing is exceptional, our priority is not performance but connecting people to God through music. Because of this, we do not wear robes, and we sit in the congregation instead of sitting in a choir loft. We are a part of, rather than apart from, the worshipping congregation. This practice also helps us to support the congregation’s song from within.
