HistoryChrist United Methodist Church
—The Story Goes On—
The story of Christ United Methodist Church began on June 7, 1987 – Pentecost Sunday – as modern-day pioneers walked from Brentwood and Franklin to a tent along Franklin Road. All summer long, under cover of that tent, they sang hymns, studied God’s Word and began developing the meaningful relationships that continue to characterize the congregation today. In late October, frost drove their gatherings inside Brentwood High School for a brief time and then to the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home where they continued to meet for about three years.
The Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church approved creating the new congregation – and contributed land for construction of a building. Those forming the new church purchased adjacent land that was more suitable for construction. The congregation consecrated its building in 1990, used part of the remaining property for the pavilion, playground and ball field – and kept the rest for future expansion.
The congregation outgrew the space in the original building in less than 10 years. An expansion was consecrated in 1999. In 2006, the church broke ground for a second addition, adding 18,000 square feet which includes a new sanctuary and classrooms.
Since its beginning, being in serving ministry to local neighbors and those around the globe in the name of Jesus Christ has been a priority of the church. The original building included such amenities as showers to make hosting overnight guests for Room in the Inn during the winter months a possibility.
Christ United Methodist Church began with 81 charter members. In 1987, average worship attendance was 70 people; today it is well over 400. The people who are Christ United Methodist Church today – and those who will be the church in the future – will continue to write the story of a church that reflects our mission of being in relationship with Christ, with one another and with God’s hurting world beyond our walls. |
